It’s race week for Ben Davis

It’s race week for Ben Davis
After months of planning for Herefordshire born, but now Oxford-based hotshoe, Ben Davis, are almost over as he prepares to take his place on the grid at Silverstone this coming weekend (17th and 18th September 2016).

The racing this weekend at the “Home of British Motor Racing” is eagerly anticipated by not only Ben, but his backers and the Renault UK Clio Cup at large. The anticipation has been cranked up a few notches with Ben being run by leading outfit – Team Pyro – and also acquiring 2015’s winningest car.  However, Ben isn’t taking anything for granted in what is a formidably competitive championship; in fact he knows the size of the challenge. It’s like walking to the moon.

Circuit in focus: Silverstone National, 18 & 19th September 2016

Circuit length (km) 2.638
Race distance (km) 47.509
Number of laps (one race on Saturday, one on Sunday): 18
Lap Record
Paul Rivett
Time: 1m04.726s (91.24mph), 27 September 2015

Silverstone is a circuit of much variation, featuring straights, billiard smooth surface and 6 turns; there’s something for everyone! A technically challenging circuit, it’s here in 2015 that Ben made his debut in the championship; 6th and 7th race finishes in an unfamiliar car were very encouraging.

The Silverstone layout promotes overtaking and with the wide track, there’s something for the faster drivers to make their way past their competitors. For spectators there’s excellent viewpoints. Copse Corner is immediately after the start and you can make passes there – we’ll be careful not to break track limits by crossing the white line here.  A few corners later and towards the end of the lap, the Brooklands/Luffield complex is excellent. Tightly bunched cars will ensure plenty of bumper rubbing. This part is like an amphitheatre; great for viewers. You can almost hear the gasps as drivers try their luck to overtake.  All the ingredients are there for a couple of memorable races; go Ben!

Ben’s view
“I’m really looking forward to getting back out at Silverstone. An awful lot of hard work has gone into making this weekend happen by a number of people, hopefully this will be the beginning of something more permanent in 2017. I haven't raced since Silverstone 12 months ago, though I have done some racing in simulators and in my track day car, but nothing compares to going door handle to door handle.  I went testing last week with Team Pyro and I was pleased with my pace around Donington Park; it was perfect preparation to dial myself and the car in."

“I do come into this weekend with some aspirations of where I want to be, but we'll take it one session at a time. It's going to be a tough ask to jump into such a competitive field and expect to be at the front, I have to remember this will be just my fourth car race weekend. But I'm going to be pushing 100% and feel as prepared as I can be, physically and mentally."

“I owe enormous gratitude to my sponsors for believing in me and the coverage and hospitality that the Renault UK Clio Cup provides. R-Tech Welding Equipment are my title sponsor for the weekend and the car looks great in their colours. Thanks also go to ABE (Ledbury), Alf Turner Butchers, Essentially Financial, Iconic Racing and Oliver Myles Marketing who are all on board for the weekend. I have around 70 guest coming on Sunday so it really will be an unforgettable weekend."

"I’d also like to thank my family for their ongoing support and girlfriend Alice; thank you for being so patient!"

"It’s going to one of the biggest weekends of my life and I can’t wait to get out on track; keep cheering for me – I love it!"
