Autumn Boiler Rush: How to Be the Plumber South London Calls in October

Boiler and heating searches climb sharply every autumn. Here's the short list of things South London plumbers should have in place before the October rush — most take an afternoon, not a month.

Every autumn, the same pattern repeats. The first properly cold week arrives, boilers that limped through summer give up, and South London homeowners start searching — emergency boiler repair, boiler service, heating engineer near me. The plumbers who get that work are rarely the best engineers on the tools. They're the ones who were findable and easy to contact on the day the heating failed.

The rush lasts roughly eight weeks before the Christmas wind-down. If you're a plumber, the useful question isn't whether demand is coming — it's whether you're set up to catch it. Here's the short list.

1. Your Google Business Profile is doing more work than your website

When a boiler dies, people search on their phone and ring the first credible option. Your Google Business Profile — not your website — is what they see first. Before October: check your categories include the services you actually want (boiler repair, heating engineer, plumber), confirm your service areas cover where you want work, and make sure recent reviews are coming in. A profile with reviews from the last fortnight reads as a business that's active right now. One whose newest review is from last spring reads as a business that might not answer the phone.

2. Make 'emergency' and 'planned' easy to tell apart

Autumn demand splits into two very different jobs: the no-heating emergency, and the planned boiler replacement the homeowner has been putting off. Your website should serve both without making people guess. A clear line at the top of the homepage — emergency callouts answered now, planned work quoted properly — converts both types instead of losing one to confusion. If your site makes a panicked homeowner read three paragraphs before finding a phone number, the rush passes you by.

3. Dig out last winter's unconverted quotes

Every boiler replacement quote you gave last winter that didn't convert is a warm lead. Many of those homeowners spent the summer saving for it — and a simple two-message follow-up now ('we're booking autumn installs, happy to refresh your quote') routinely turns a percentage of them into jobs. It costs an hour. No other autumn marketing task pays as well per hour spent.

4. Ask for the review at the moment of relief

The best time to ask for a Google review is when the heating comes back on and the customer is visibly relieved. A text with a direct review link, sent the same day, is the mechanism that actually works. Ten more reviews before mid-October is realistic for almost any plumber who does this consistently — and review count is one of the few things that genuinely moves how often you appear in local results.

What we'd honestly do first

  • Fix the Google Business Profile — categories, service areas, review requests. Highest return, zero cost.
  • Add a clear emergency/planned split to the homepage so both customer types convert.
  • Follow up last winter's unconverted boiler quotes.
  • Only then spend money on ads — they amplify a working setup; they don't rescue a broken one.

None of this is complicated, but it's the sort of thing that stays undone for years when you're on the tools full-time. We help South London plumbers put these fundamentals in place — and we're happy to tell you honestly if you don't need us yet.
