Trade work in Merton: Wimbledon, Mitcham, Morden and the jobs between them

Merton is really three markets in one borough. Wimbledon sees strong loft and roofing demand alongside plumbing and electrics. In Mitcham and Morden, plumbing searches lead. And Morden's town centre is set to be rebuilt. Here is what plumbers, electricians, roofers, builders and every other trade will find there.

Wimbledon: conversions and roofs

Of the Merton areas we researched, Wimbledon is the only one where roofer and loft conversion searches match plumber and electrician searches, each in the hundreds a month (Google's range: 100 to 1,000). Emergency plumber searches sit in the hundreds too. Parts of Wimbledon are conservation areas, including Wimbledon Village, Wimbledon North and Wimbledon West, so roof alterations and visible changes need checking before you quote.

Mitcham and Morden: plumbing first

In Mitcham and Morden, plumber searches each run in the hundreds a month, more than electrician or loft conversion searches in either place. Across Merton, 77.6% of homes heat with mains gas only, so boiler repairs, servicing and replacements are the bread and butter.

Morden: a town centre being rebuilt

In January 2026 Merton Council agreed an initial £30 million for Remaking Morden, a long-term plan to rebuild the town centre with thousands of new homes. On top of that, the London Plan sets Merton a target of 9,180 new homes in the ten years to 2028/29, 2,610 of them on small sites.

Who you will be working for

Of Merton's 81,726 households, 55.6% are owner occupied, 29.1% privately rented (about 23,700 homes) and 14.2% socially rented. Nearly three in ten homes are let privately, which means annual gas safety checks and five-yearly electrical inspections for the landlords who own them. 9.8% of homes heat with electricity only.

Planning: check before you quote

Merton has 29 conservation areas, including Cricket Green in Mitcham and John Innes: Merton Park. In John Innes: Merton Park and John Innes: Wilton Crescent, Article 4 directions remove some permitted development rights, so some external changes that would be allowed elsewhere need permission there.

Where the work is

SW19 and SW20 (Wimbledon, Raynes Park), CR4 (Mitcham), SM4 (Morden).

Getting found here

A Merton trade usually needs two different pitches: conversion and renovation evidence for Wimbledon, and fast, reliable plumbing and heating for Mitcham and Morden. Your website and Google profile should make both easy to find.
