Before and After: How to Photograph Your Jobs So They Win You Work

Good job photos build trust faster than any description. Here is a simple routine for taking photos that actually help you win work, using the phone already in your pocket.

Homeowners find it hard to judge a tradesperson from words alone. Everyone says they are reliable and tidy. A clear photo of the work, especially a before and after pair, shows it.

Take the before photo first

It is the one most people forget. Before you start, take a few wide shots and a couple of close-ups of the problem. If the job goes well, the contrast is your best marketing. If something unexpected comes up, you also have a record.

Simple rules for better photos

  • Wipe the lens. It sounds trivial and makes a real difference.
  • Use daylight where you can, and turn the lights on in dark rooms.
  • Hold the phone level and stand in the same spot for before and after.
  • Tidy the area first. Move tools and bags out of frame.
  • Take a wide shot and a close-up of the detail you are proud of.

Respect your customer's privacy

Always ask before you photograph a home, and avoid showing faces, personal items, house numbers and anything that identifies the property unless the customer is happy. A quick 'do you mind if I take a few photos for my portfolio?' is usually all it takes.

Where to use the photos

  • Your Google Business Profile: add new photos regularly, since active profiles feel more trustworthy.
  • Your website: a short gallery on each service page, with a line about the job and the area.
  • Social media: a simple before and after post takes a minute and is easy to share.
  • Quotes: attach two or three similar jobs to show what you can do.

Build a routine, not a project

Create a folder on your phone called 'Best jobs' and drop in your favourites at the end of each day. Once a month, upload the best few to your profile and website. In a year you will have a library that no competitor can copy.

Photos will never replace good work. But they make sure good work is seen by the people deciding who to call.
