How Many Google Reviews Does Your South London Trades Business Actually Need?

Everyone knows Google reviews matter. But how many do you actually need to rank in the Local Pack and convert homeowners into enquiries? Here's what the data says — and a simple system to get there.

If you've looked at the businesses showing up in Google's Local Pack for your trade in South London, you've probably noticed something: they all have reviews. A lot of them.

But how many is enough? Is there a number you need to hit before Google starts taking you seriously? And does rating matter more than volume?

Here's what actually matters — and a simple system to get there without it feeling like a chore.

What the Local Pack data tells us

Looking at the businesses ranking in the Google Local Pack for competitive South London trades searches — kitchen fitter Clapham, builder Brixton, bathroom renovation Dulwich — a clear pattern emerges.

  • Businesses in position 1–3 typically have 25–80+ reviews
  • Average rating of 4.7 or above is almost universal among top-ranked listings
  • Recency matters — businesses with reviews in the last 30 days consistently outperform those whose last review was 6+ months ago
  • Response rate matters — businesses that respond to every review (positive and negative) rank higher than those that don't

The magic number for competitive South London searches is approximately 25–30 reviews at 4.7+. Below that, you're fighting for visibility. Above it, with everything else in place, you're consistently in the conversation.

Volume vs rating — which matters more?

Both matter, but they matter differently at different stages.

In the early stages (under 15 reviews), rating matters more. A business with 8 reviews at 5.0 will often outrank one with 12 reviews at 4.2. Get your first reviews from your most satisfied, enthusiastic clients.

Once you're past 20–25 reviews, volume starts to matter more. Google treats a high volume of reviews as a trust signal — it suggests you're an active, established business with consistent client relationships. Keep asking every client, even when the rating is already strong.

The simple system that works

The businesses with the most reviews aren't the ones who got lucky. They have a system. Here's the simplest version:

  • On the day you finish every job, send a WhatsApp or text: 'Really glad you're happy with the work — if you have two minutes, a Google review would mean a lot to us. Here's the direct link: [your link]'
  • Make the link as direct as possible — go to your Google Business Profile, click 'Get more reviews' and copy the short link. One tap, straight to the review box
  • Follow up once, 5–7 days later, if no review has appeared: 'Hi [name] — just checking the link worked okay. No pressure at all, but reviews really do help small businesses like ours'
  • Respond to every review within 48 hours — thank positive reviewers specifically (mention the job or area), and address negative reviews calmly and professionally
  • Never incentivise reviews — offering discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews violates Google's guidelines and can get your listing penalised

What to do if you have a negative review

A single negative review feels catastrophic when you have five total. It feels manageable when you have 40. The best response to a negative review is twofold: respond calmly and professionally in public (showing prospective clients how you handle problems), and accelerate your review-gathering to dilute its impact.

A well-handled negative review can actually increase trust more than a string of generic five-stars. Prospective clients read responses — they want to see that you're a professional who takes feedback seriously.
