How South London Homeowners Actually Choose a Plumber Online
From a late-night search to a booked job, here is the path most homeowners follow when they pick a plumber, and what earns trust at each step.

When a tap will not stop dripping or the boiler goes cold, almost nobody sits down and compares ten plumbers. They pick up a phone, search, and make a decision in a few minutes. Understanding that short journey is the cheapest marketing education a plumber can get.
Step 1: The search
Most journeys start with something like 'plumber near me', 'emergency plumber' or a plumber plus a local area name. The results the homeowner sees first are usually the map listings from Google, followed by ads and then ordinary website results. If your Google Business Profile is missing, half-filled or out of date, you are not in the first conversation at all.
Step 2: The quick scan
The homeowner glances at three things: how many reviews you have, how recent they are, and whether the business looks local and real. A profile with a clear name, a photo of the van or the team, an accurate service area and recent reviews feels safe. A profile with two reviews from 2021 feels risky.
- Review count and recency matter more than a perfect score.
- Real photos beat stock images every time.
- A phone number that is easy to tap on mobile removes friction.
Step 3: The check
If the job is a boiler replacement or a bathroom, people look a little harder. They click through to the website, read a couple of reviews and look for signs of credibility, such as Gas Safe registration, insurance and a clear description of what you do. For an emergency, they skip most of this and call the first reasonable option.
Step 4: The contact
This is where many good plumbers lose the job. A missed call with no follow-up usually goes to the next name on the list. Answering quickly, or sending a short text back when you cannot pick up, keeps the lead warm.
What to fix first
- Complete your Google Business Profile: categories, service areas, photos, opening hours.
- Ask every happy customer for a review while the job is fresh.
- Put your phone number and your credentials at the top of every page.
- Reply to missed calls and enquiries the same day, ideally within minutes.
None of this needs a big budget. It needs the basics done properly and kept up to date. If you would like a second pair of eyes on where your own setup stands, we are happy to take a look.
