September Reset: The 6 Marketing Jobs Every Trades Business Should Do Before Autumn

September is the trades equivalent of New Year. Homeowners are back from holiday, planning autumn projects and searching for quotes. Here's the 6-job checklist to make sure they find you.

There's a reason September feels like a fresh start for trades businesses. Homeowners are back from holiday, the kids are back at school, and anyone who spent the summer thinking 'we really should sort the kitchen' or 'let's finally do the loft' starts actually searching for quotes.

That surge in intent lasts roughly eight weeks before the Christmas wind-down begins. The trades businesses that win it aren't necessarily the best — they're the ones whose marketing was in order before the surge hit. Here are the six jobs to do now.

1. Refresh your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the first thing most local searchers see. Add photos from your last 3–4 completed jobs, update your description to mention the work you want more of this autumn (extensions, renovations, refits), and confirm your opening hours and service areas are accurate. Ten minutes here has an outsized effect on local rankings.

2. Run a review sprint

Before the autumn rush, message every customer from the last six months who hasn't left a review. A short, friendly WhatsApp with a direct Google review link is all it takes. Moving from 15 reviews to 25 doesn't just improve your ranking — it materially changes how many searchers choose you over the names above and below you in the map pack.

3. Update your website's proof

Swap in recent project photos, add any new testimonials, and make sure your phone number and quote form are visible without scrolling on mobile. When autumn searchers land on your site from Google, you have about five seconds to look established, local and trustworthy. Fresh proof is what does that.

4. Decide your autumn Google Ads budget now

If you're going to run ads for autumn work, set the budget and campaigns up before demand spikes — not in mid-October when cost-per-click has risen with everyone else's. Even a modest, tightly targeted campaign around your highest-value jobs (loft conversions, extensions, full renovations) outperforms a bigger reactive budget later.

5. Chase your outstanding quotes

Every unconverted quote from the summer is a warm lead sitting in a spreadsheet or a pile of messages. A simple two-touch follow-up — one now, one in two weeks — will typically convert 10–20% of them. That's revenue you already paid to generate. It costs nothing but an hour of your time.

6. Plan winter content while you're busy

The trades businesses that stay visible all year are the ones that prepare content when they have proof to show, not when they're quiet. Photograph every finished job this autumn — before, during and after — and bank it. Those photos become your winter social posts, your case studies and your website updates when the phone naturally slows.

None of these six jobs requires a big budget or technical expertise. What they require is doing them before your competitors do. In local search, that timing advantage is often the whole game.
