Brixton is an accredited Creative Enterprise Zone, one of the Mayor of London's flagship schemes supporting creative businesses. Lambeth Council's Creative Economy Strategy puts the borough at more than 2,000 creative businesses employing over 31,000 people, and in January the Brixton zone was re-accredited with a further £2.2 million in funding as part of the wider Creative Enterprise Zones investment. Since the zone launched in 2018, Lambeth Council says it has helped secure over £50 million for the creative sector and opened opportunities for more than 5,000 young people.
Alongside that sits the commercial landmark everyone knows: Brixton Market and Brixton Village, home to over 100 independent traders from 50 nationalities. The market is currently a live, high-profile local story, with the recent £80 million sale listing and a community campaign to protect independent trader access making national news.
The numbers behind the headline tell their own story: only around 7% of Brixton's floorspace is office space. This is not a borough of corporate headquarters and professional-services practices. It is a creative, independent, market-trading economy, and paid search for it has to be built differently.
