Google Local Service Ads for Trades: Are They Worth It in 2026?

Google Guaranteed badges, pay-per-lead pricing, top-of-page placement — Local Service Ads sound ideal for trades. Here's an honest breakdown of when they work, when they don't, and how they compare to standard Google Ads.

If you've searched for any trade service recently, you've seen them: the listings right at the very top of Google, above even the normal ads, with a green 'Google Guaranteed' tick next to them. Those are Local Service Ads (LSAs), and they work on a fundamentally different model to anything else Google offers.

For trades businesses, they can be excellent — or a waste of money. Here's how to tell which camp you'd fall into.

How Local Service Ads actually work

Unlike standard Google Ads, you don't pay per click. You pay per lead — a genuine phone call or message from someone in your area looking for your service. Lead costs vary by trade and region, but in London you're typically looking at £15–£45 per lead depending on the trade.

To qualify, you go through Google's verification: proof of insurance, relevant qualifications (Part P for electrical work, Gas Safe for gas work, and so on), and sometimes background checks. Pass, and you get the Google Guaranteed badge — which matters more than most tradespeople realise, because it immediately answers the trust question every homeowner has.

When LSAs work brilliantly

  • Emergency and urgent work — 'electrician near me', 'boiler repair', 'locked out'. The searcher calls the first verified name they see, and LSAs put you there.
  • High-frequency, lower-ticket jobs where speed matters more than a considered quote process.
  • Businesses with strong review counts — LSA ranking leans heavily on your Google reviews, so 30+ good reviews gives you a genuine edge.
  • Trades where the qualification barrier filters out cowboys — Gas Safe and Part P verification meaningfully raise lead quality.

When they're a poor fit

LSAs are weaker for high-value, considered projects. Someone planning a £40,000 extension or a full kitchen renovation does not hire the first badge they see — they research, compare portfolios and get multiple quotes. For that work, your website, your reviews and your organic presence do the heavy lifting, and standard Google Ads targeting high-intent project keywords usually deliver better-qualified enquiries.

The other honest caveat: lead quality varies. Some LSA leads are price-shoppers ringing five businesses in a row. Google's dispute process lets you reclaim costs for genuinely invalid leads, but you still spend the time answering them.

LSAs vs standard Google Ads

It's not either/or — they solve different problems. LSAs win you the urgent, ready-to-book searcher at the very top of the page. Standard ads win you the considered, high-value project by sending people to a proper landing page that sells your quality. SEO and reviews underpin both, because every serious prospect checks you out before calling.

For most of the trades businesses we work with, the right answer is a blend: LSAs for immediate lead flow while organic rankings build, standard ads for the big-ticket project work, and a consistent review-generation habit that makes everything else cheaper over time.
